The BMW X series are a prime example of vehicles we wish Europe would keep to itself.

Oh yes, do not call the X5 a SUV. BMW wants you to know it didn’t just create another SUV. No, the X5 is a whole different type of midsize crossover, deserving it’s own segment dubed the SAV. To emphasize is onroad prowess.

But they’re made in America?

Only the ones they sell in America. Which they most certainly should not be doing.

Not true they exported 73% of production in 2017. They do assembly in a few other places for some X models, but the majority of US production goes overseas. That’s why they’re in SC, the Port of Charleston is one of the biggest in the US, plus tax credits. Same reason Volvo is opening a production facility outside of Charleston.

Yep, same deal with Mercedes in AL. When I toured the plant in 2001 (as part of an MBA logistics class, interestingly enough) there were RHD and Diesels rolling off the same assembly line on their way to Europe and Japan.

I had a case study on BMW in 2000 as part of an MBA class. Basically all we talked about was how efficient they had gotten at building the world’s best car, the 3-series. There was also
some discussion about how their new X5 would do against the Mercedes ML, but most people agreed it was a fringe segment and that luxury SUVs would never really take off.

Way to temper my resolve with annoyingly vague reporting of facts. At no point does it say where they are exported to. I will be surprised if Europe factors in very much. Europe which sets the tone with narrow streets and micro-compacts. NA & SA on the other hand comprise a healthy chunk of the world.
Tl;dr I still loathe these and won’t be swayed into accepting our new SUV overlords. Certainly not their poorest efforts.

You are in a parallel reality where everything taught in business school is useless! :P
